Residents of the Mangaung Local Municipality continue to be plagued by sanitation issues.
Botshabelo community members raised their frustration over a lack of service delivery by the municipality and inadequate conditions that they have been subjected to over the years.
Mpho Mahao, who is one of the residents in Makhale Sebata Street in the L section in Botshabelo, tells Bloemfontein Courant that they have been using pit toilets for years and recent rainy conditions have filled up their toilets. Worms are now coming out of them. He says those conditions are posing a threat to the children and the health of the community. Mahao says there is only one truck that is operational at the sanitation depot in Botshabelo, with municipal workers who knock off at midday, which leaves them stranded.
“The conditions are extremely bad – the smell coming from those pit toilets is awful, and this poses a huge health threat on community members. Mangaung municipality has been promising us flushing toilets but they don’t deliver on their promises. The last time that they came to move the toilets was during elections, and they even told us that they are struggling to move our toilets due to a lack of space,” said Mahao.
Mangaung City Manager, Sello More, is yet to comment on the matter.
